Blog: Gifts for the Oil Companies

May 18, 2011 | By Marge Clark, BVM

Yesterday, the Senate made a terrible decision! They disallowed a bill which would eliminate the giving away $20 billion from the taxes we all pay. This $20 billion goes to the big five oil companies (not affecting the smaller local oil companies), which raked in over $10 billion in profits (not total revenue) in just the first three months of this year. Most Americans are struggling paycheck to paycheck, increasing numbers are falling below the poverty threshold, and safety-net resources are being pulled out from under those in need.

This has nothing to do with prices at the gas pump! This is an issue of justice. Why should companies with billions of dollars in profits be gifted with additional billions of dollars from our hard-earned taxes, when nearly twenty percent of our children are living in poverty and are food-insecure?  What are we saying our nation stands for?
