Poverty Rates

NETWORK strongly supports legislation designed to help people lift themselves out of poverty and live lives of dignity. This includes lobbying for “safety-net” programs such as nutrition assistance and housing programs.

Each fall, when the U.S. Census Bureau releases its poverty reports, we are reminded that economic inequality continues to grow.

NETWORK is a member of the “Half in Ten” Coalition, which works to address poverty in the U.S. As they remind us,

Poverty in America undermines our country’s economic strength, hinders our ability to compete, erodes the health of our communities, and limits opportunities for children and adults. It does not need to be this way. Throughout our history, we have seen periods of dramatic poverty reduction when elected officials and people across the country have come together to secure our economy from the bottom up.

This moment of financial and economic challenge is the right time for a renewed commitment to reducing poverty in America and to making our economy work for everyone. To achieve this vision, we must set a national goal of reducing poverty by half in 10 years. Doing so is not only an economic imperative, but also a moral one.

NETOWRK also works actively with the S.A.V.E. Coalition (Strengthening America's Values and Economy for All) to bring about a more equitable and caring society. The primary values of S.A.V.E. are to:

  • protect low-income and vulnerable people
  • justly increase revenue
  • cut wasteful spending in the Pentagon budget and elsewhere
  • promote job creation and strengthen the economy.
