WASHINGTON—The decision by the Trump administration to share the sensitive tax information of immigrants with the Department of Homeland Security is unlawful and will “shatter communities” around the country, said Joan F. Neal, Interim Executive Director of NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice, in response to the April 8 Memorandum of Understanding (‘MOU’) signed by the Department of the Treasury and the Department of Homeland Security.
“This unconstitutional overreach by the Trump-Vance Administration will weaponize sensitive data of taxpayers who have dutifully complied with federal tax law, contributing to the well-being of this country, and will use it to engage in the mass separation and deportation of families,” said Neal. “How should we as Christians respond? Our call is to love our neighbor. Immigrants are our neighbors, members of our families, our friends, and our fellow parishioners. We are called to condemn these unlawful, immoral actions that will shatter communities around the country.”
Neal added, “Federal privacy law unambiguously protects all taxpayer information. There is no exception for purposes of immigration enforcement. This action is illegal. The Administration must comply with the law. We call on Congress and the Courts to use their Constitutional authority and stop this unprecedented breach of information and trust.”
For decades, Republican and Democrat Administrations alike have made explicit promises to protect the privacy of all U.S. residents with federally taxable income to file returns and pay taxes as required by federal law. In 2022 alone, immigrant taxpayers paid $97 billion in federal, state, and local taxes. More than one third, or $33.9 billion, of tax contributions goes to Social Security, Medicare, and unemployment insurance programs, even as they do not receive these benefits.

Organización Católica condena que el IRS comparta datos de inmigrantes con Seguridad Nacional
WASHINGTON—La decisión de la administración Trump de compartir información fiscal confidencial de personas inmigrantes con el Departamento de Seguridad Nacional es ilegal y “romperá comunidades” en todo el país, declaró Joan F. Neal, Directora Ejecutiva Interina de NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice, en respuesta al Memorando de Entendimiento (MOU, por sus siglas en inglés) firmado el 8 de abril por el Departamento del Tesoro y el Departamento de Seguridad Nacional.
“Este abuso inconstitucional por parte de la administración Trump-Vance convierte en arma información sensible de personas que han cumplido fielmente con las leyes fiscales, que han contribuido al bienestar del país, y ahora buscan usarla para separar y deportar familias en masa,” afirmó Neal. “¿Cómo debemos responder como cristianas y cristianos? Nuestro llamado es a amar al prójimo. Las personas inmigrantes son nuestro prójimo: son nuestras familias, amistades, y compañeras de comunidad. Nuestro llamado es resistir estas acciones ilegales e inmorales que destruirán comunidades en todo el país.”
Neal añadió: “Las leyes federales de privacidad protegen claramente la información de toda persona contribuyente. No hay excepciones para propósitos de control migratorio. Es el Congreso, no la administración, quien hace las leyes, y esta acción es ilegal. La administración debe cumplir con la ley. Hacemos un llamado al Congreso y a los tribunales a usar su autoridad constitucional para frenar esta violación sin precedentes de la información y la confianza pública.””
Durante décadas, administraciones de ambos partidos —republicano y demócrata— han prometido explícitamente proteger la privacidad de todas las personas que viven en EE.UU. y tienen ingresos sujetos a impuestos federales, para que puedan presentar sus declaraciones y pagar sus impuestos como lo exige la ley. Tan solo en 2022, personas inmigrantes contribuyeron con $97 mil millones de dólares en impuestos federales, estatales y locales. Más de una tercera parte —$33.9 mil millones— se destinó a programas como el Seguro Social, Medicare y seguros de desempleo, a pesar de que no reciben esos beneficios.
