WASHINGTON, D.C. — The shooting death of a Minnesota woman by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on January 7 is a horrific consequence of out-of-control immigration enforcement agencies terrorizing communities with violence, NETWORK Executive Director Laurie Carafone said in a statement today:
“We mourn Renee Nicole Good as a beloved mother of three and a member in her community who cared for her neighbors and her family. ICE agents involved in her death must be held accountable. This violence is a direct consequence of policies that empower agents to terrorize communities with deadly tools and impunity. We demand a thorough investigation and join in solidarity with the Minneapolis community and communities around the country reeling in the face of oppression.
“Our government continues to disregard the basic needs of families while ICE’s budget grows unchecked, making us all less safe. Congress must act to end the militarization of our streets and enact policies that build trust and safety. We must honor our U.S. commitment to justice and not remain silent as a nation while ICE assails human life and dignity. This is a moral moment in our nation and as Pope Leo has set forth, we are called to bring Gospel values into economic and political life through justice, peace and care.”
