NETWORK Expresses Sorrow, Gratitude, and Prayer for Pope Francis

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEAE: April 21, 2025

WASHINGTON—NETWORK expresses profound sorrow and grief at the passing of Pope Francis on April 21, as well as gratitude for the transformative impact of his pontificate, said Joan F. Neal, Interim Executive Director. Full statement follows:

“NETWORK, a Catholic social justice lobby grounded in the witness of Catholic Sisters, expresses profound sorrow for the loss of Pope Francis. A humble and prophetic leader filled with the joy of the Gospel, he championed the dignity of all people, particularly those of us relegated to the peripheries, the sacredness of all creation, and an inclusive church that welcomes all. He was a compassionate leader who cared about people and the planet.

“Whether from poverty, racism, LGBTQ+ discrimination, forced migration, or the destruction of our common home, he worked tirelessly for a ‘culture of care’ for all, without exception. Pope Francis had a profound impact on the Catholic Church, and we pray that his legacy continues to transform the church and the entire world.

“We are grateful for his affirmation of Catholic Sisters and for elevating the role of women in the church over the past 12 years. Moreover, his advocacy—on behalf of the environment, immigration, inclusion, and so many other issues—encouraged us in our political ministry to build up the common good through just and equitable federal policy.

“Pope Francis helped us to believe in the possibility of a more just and merciful world. NETWORK pledges to continue working toward the realization of his dream for a better future. The pope noted, ‘The only future worth building includes everyone.’ As the church observes a Jubilee Year of Hope, we resolve to live into the hope that the vision he proclaimed might be realized.”

Founded by Catholic Sisters in 1972, NETWORK is an inclusive, national, Catholic advocacy organization open to all who share our values, working for justice and equity for everyone. For 53 years, NETWORK has educated, organized, and lobbied for federal policies that serve the common good and honor the dignity of all people.
