Man Allegedly Robs Bank of $1 to Get Health Care in Jail

Jun 22, 2011 | By Page May

From the Daily Beast—

Richard James Verone allegedly walked into a bank and handed a note to the teller saying he was armed and demanding a single dollar. He then sat down and waited for the police to arrive. "He's sitting on the sofa as you walk in the front door,” the teller said in the 911 call. Verone, who was unarmed, demanded such a small amount because he wasn’t interested in making money; he wanted to get sent to prison, so he could receive health care to treat a growth in his chest and two ruptured disks. "I'm sort of a logical person and that was my logic, what I came up with," Verone said in a jailhouse interview. "If it is called manipulation, then out of necessity because I need medical care, then I guess I am manipulating the courts to get medical care." He appears in court June 28.

"Man Allegedly Robs Bank of $1 to Get Health Care in Jail"

I actually know of another instance of this. My husband is an American Baptist pastor and a man joined his congregation in NE Philadelphia in the 90s. He had been in prison for bank robbery and while there he developed kidney disease. After his release from prison he had a harder and harder time getting treatment because he had no health insurance. One night he called my husband at 11 PM and said he had robbed a bank so as to go back to prison to get dialysis and would Keith go with him to turn himself in to the FBI. I about nearly perished (we weren't married very long; there was nothing in the pre-nup about bank robbers and the FBI, I told him). But Keith went with the guy and helped turn him in. We wonder from time to time how Bob the Bank Robber is doing. Quite a country we live in.
