Catholic Lobby: Sisters Are Proud to Support the Equality Act
Sr. Simone: “Catholics who embrace discrimination are rejecting the Lord’s call.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Catholic Sisters and activists of NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice strongly support the Equality Act and urge Congress to pass this legislation into law. The Equality Act would finally protect our LGBTQ+ sisters and brothers from discrimination.

Without this legislation, members of the LGBTQ+ community can be fired at will, denied a place to live, and refused medical care. The Catholic Sisters and activists of NETWORK are proud to support our LGBTQ+ friends and colleagues to ensure they live free from discrimination. Such protection is at the heart of our faith’s mandate to protect the vulnerable.

On Wednesday, Sister Simone Campbell, SSS, Executive Director of NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice, joined national religious leaders in the Faith for Equality coalition to endorse the legislation.

Sister Simone Campbell, SSS, Executive Director of NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice:

“As a Catholic Sister, I know that my faith mandates that all people be treated with dignity and equality. I urge Congress to pass the Equality Act and finally write protections for our LGBTQ+ sisters and brothers into law.

“I want to be very clear, because some leaders in the Catholic Church have attempted to manipulate our faith by spreading misinformation and fear about this legislation. It is our duty as Catholics to affirm and protect the God-given dignity of every person. Catholics who embrace discrimination are rejecting the Lord’s call. Jesus of the Gospel cared for those who some in society turned away and called his followers to ‘love one another.’ For me, passing the Equality Act will be one step toward ensuring that we have a society where the dignity of all is honored and protected.”
