NETWORK Lobby: Catholics Oppose Policies That Harm Migrants

For Immediate Release: January 20, 2025

WASHINGTON—“As a national Catholic organization, NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice has always and will continue to uphold the dignity and rights of every person, no matter their citizen status.  From our founding by Catholic sisters 52 years ago to the current day, we proclaim Catholic teaching that calls us to welcome those who are travelers, immigrants or non-citizens in our midst,” said Joan F. Neal, NETWORK Interim Executive Director.

“As people of faith, we are committed to ensuring that all people, especially our immigrant families, neighbors and friends are treated with dignity, respect and love.  We will not remain silent while our neighbors are harmed by cruel and vicious treatment.  We strongly urge the new Administration to refrain from actions that separate families, divide communities, and put children in harm’s way,” Neal said.

“The announced plans of the incoming Administration have created a perilous time for many immigrant communities – those who have lived here for many years as well as those who have newly arrived.  Instead of welcoming them and recognizing their contributions to our country, this Administration intends to demonize, attack, and abuse them,” Neal said.

She concluded, “NETWORK pledges to shed light on these heinous policies and hold our government accountable, with a vision of an inclusive, pluralistic democracy that welcomes those fleeing persecution, keeps families together and supports an economy for all so that we can build a more just future.”

Ronnate Asirwatham, NETWORK Director of Government Relations, added: “In the coming days we will see an onslaught of Executive Orders, proclamations, and legislation that will attempt to criminalize our neighbors, family members, and friends, we will not let our community be divided in this way. From doctors to grocery store workers, if our neighbors are ripped from our communities, we will be grieving their loss, absence, gifts, and contributions to our community and country. We refuse to stay silent as the state unnecessarily targets people, all the while pursuing policies that benefit only the ultra-wealthy.”

Founded by Catholic Sisters in 1972, NETWORK is an inclusive, national, Catholic advocacy organization open to all who share our values, working for justice and equity for everyone. For 53 years, NETWORK has educated, organized, and lobbied for federal policies that serve the common good and honor the dignity of all people.
