Catholic Lobby: The Heroes Act is Pro-Life Legislation

WASHINGTON, D.C. – After months of inaction from Senate Republicans that has left millions of Americans without any help during the COVID-19 pandemic, House Democrats have released a revised Heroes Act in order to bring Republicans back to negotiations. It is immoral that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has refused to take up the COVID-19 relief legislation that the House passed in May, but House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her Democratic colleagues have not given up on the American people.
NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice strongly supports passage of the revised Heroes Act. The bill provides immediately needed COVID-19 relief to families and communities while protecting our right to vote in the upcoming election. We urge all lawmakers in both Chambers to pass this legislation immediately.

“After months of delays from President Trump and Senator McConnell, the House’s updated Heroes Act will provide long overdue resources to save lives. This legislation would extend unemployment insurance and protections for essential workers, expand nutrition assistance for families in need, provide funding for Medicaid, and pay for new testing, tracking, and treatment of COVID-19. The Heroes Act is pro-life legislation that deserves bipartisan support.
“The updated Heroes Act also addresses the new threats to our foundational democratic systems. The provisions supporting elections, Census, and the USPS reflect what Catholic Sisters have been urging for months. Now, with early in-person and mail-in voting already underway in many states, the emergency election funding is critical.
“This bill is a good-faith effort on the part of House Democrats towards compromise, and we urge Senate Republicans to finally follow suit. The American people are facing catastrophe while Senate Republicans delay. This is the faithful way forward, and the nation cannot wait.”
