Newly Passed Bipartisan Farm Bill Shows Path Forward for Congress
Sister Simone: “This Farm Bill is the perfect example of the good that can come from bipartisan negotiation.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – As Congress votes to pass the 2018 Farm Bill, Sister Simone Campbell, SSS, Executive Director of NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice issued the following statement:

This Farm Bill is the perfect example of the good that can come from bipartisan negotiation. Passing this bill into law, our elected leaders, both Democrats and Republicans, reaffirm our shared commitment to farmers and families in need of nutrition assistance.

“After many months of bipartisan negotiation, the final bill protects SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), the nation’s most effective anti-poverty program that puts food on the table of 42 million Americans. Moreover, it improves SNAP by investing in work opportunities for program recipients, utilizing proactive, rather than punitive, measures to help families move out of poverty.

The bipartisan work that crafted the Farm Bill should be seen as a way forward for both parties. By working together, Congress can provide needed financial security to the American people, while protecting vital safety net programs. I urge President Trump to sign this bill into law immediately.”
