Washington DC : NETWORK, A National Catholic Social Justice Lobby, today celebrates the signing by President Obama of historic healthcare reform legislation. This is a remarkable time in our nation’s history as we finally take concrete steps to bring healthcare to tens of millions of people who have been denied this essential right. Those who supported passing this bill have confirmed our belief that access to healthcare is an essential prolife value. While not perfect, the legislation is a vital step toward that day when healthcare is available to all who need it.

Sister Simone Campbell, Executive Director of NETWORK, is one of the guests attending the signing of the bill. She stated, “Today, we want to express our deep gratitude to our elected officials who supported extending healthcare to 32 million people in the United States while not changing existing law on federal funding of abortion. We also celebrate the many voices of faith who engaged in dialogue about the legislation. Although we did not all agree about specifics in the bill, this important dialogue demonstrated our shared faith value for the sanctity of life.”

NETWORK—a Catholic leader in the global movement for justice and peace—educates, organizes and lobbies for economic and social transformation. Founded in 1971 by 47 Catholic sisters, NETWORK is supported by thousands of groups and individuals committed to working for social and economic justice.
