Catholic Social Justice Lobby: Gerrymandering Ruling Blow to Democracy
Sr. Quincy: “The arc of the moral universe is slightly longer as a result of today’s decision, but our struggle for justice continues.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Supreme Court has ruled to allow extreme partisan gerrymandering, embracing the immoral political tactic. The Catholic Sisters and activists of NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice condemn these gerrymandering decisions. NETWORK issued the following statement:

Sister Quincy Howard, OP, Government Relations Specialist for NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice said:

“The Catholic Sisters and activists of NETWORK were dismayed by the Supreme Court’s gerrymandering decision. My Catholic faith teaches that we have a responsibility to participate in politics out of a concern for, and commitment to, the common good. We participate by casting our ballot, and a just democracy ensures that our vote is fairly represented. This was a disingenuous cop-out on the part of the Supreme Court with the majority claiming that the only remaining legal form of vote-stealing isn’t their business. And so we continue the fight against map manipulation using every tool at our disposal. The arc of the moral universe is slightly longer as a result of today’s decision, but our struggle for justice continues.”

H.R. 1, the For the People Act, which was passed by the House will outlaw extreme partisan gerrymandering. The Catholic Sisters and activists of NETWORK urge the Senate take up and pass this crucial legislation now, ending this immoral political practice.
