Catholic Social Justice Lobby Condemns Trump’s Scorched Earth Road Map
Meg Olson: “This document will become the Administration’s road map for dismantling vital programs for the common good.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – This week, President Trump presented his proposed Fiscal Year 2020 budget to Congress. Meg Olson, NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice Grassroots Mobilization Manager, issued the following statement:

“While President Trump’s hyper-partisan budget proposal and $8.6 billion request for a border wall is obviously dead on arrival, we know this document will become the Administration’s road map for dismantling vital programs for the common good. The Catholic Sisters and activists of NETWORK urge Congress to reject the Trump Administration’s abandonment of affordable housing, healthcare, Medicaid, SNAP, and an accurate 2020 Census – and instead create a faithful budget that invests in the common good. NETWORK Members are prepared to act to ensure that Congress passes a faithful budget and that executive overreach is blocked.

“The people of the United States spoke loud and clear in the 2018 midterms, choosing champions for the common good over politicians focused on dismantling our nation’s human needs programs. Voters rejected the 2017 tax law and the many attempts to repeal the ACA in favor of raising reasonable revenue for responsible programs. President Trump has ignored the people he is meant to represent. Last year, we saw that the President is prepared to use executive action to slash and burn programs that work for people in poverty, immigrants, and the common good – all to lower taxes on the wealthy and pay for a hateful border wall. This is a moral atrocity.

At NETWORK, we are concerned that President Trump will once again bypass Congress in order to institute the scorched earth policies presented in his Fiscal Year 2020 budget. It is critical that Congress and the people of the United States prepare to block these attacks on the common good. A faithful budget would invest in healthcare and nutrition, housing, and an accurate 2020 Census. The Catholic Sisters and activists of NETWORK look forward to working with Congress to create a faithful, bipartisan budget that works to mend the gaps that divide our nation, and NETWORK Members are prepared to act against executive overreach.”
