NETWORK Applauds House of Representatives for Passing the For The People Act
Sr. Simone: “The For The People Act is faithful democracy in action.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the House of Representatives voted to pass H.R. 1, the For The People Act, a critical step toward restoring faith in our government and breathing new life into our democracy. NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice issued the following statement:

Sister Simone Campbell, SSS, Executive Director of NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice said:

“After years of inaction from a Republican-controlled Congress, I rejoice at the visionary leadership that the House of Representatives has shown by passing this democracy reform legislation. Our Catholic faith teaches that we have a responsibility to participate in politics out of a concern for the common good. Only once we have a government that truly represents the 100% can we mend the gaps that plague our nation.

“The For The People Act is faithful democracy in action. It will help restore faith in our government by protecting every person’s vote, promoting evenhanded redistricting, and removing big money from campaigns. The Catholic Sisters and activists of NETWORK call on the Senate to quickly take up and pass this legislation. Only then can our nation heal.”

Sister Quincy Howard, OP, Government Relations Advocate for NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice said:

“Social justice begins with inclusion and empowerment. The passage of the For The People Act puts us on a path towards a more inclusive, empowering, and just democracy. The inner workings of our government are deeply broken, and the electoral and political campaign process is grotesquely distorted.

“Today’s historic House vote to pass H.R. 1 brings us closer to becoming a democratic nation by and for the people. Restoring a functional and fair democracy is a means to multiple ends: to establish justice, to ensure domestic tranquility, to promote the general welfare, and to secure the blessings of liberty. The founding of the United States was a bold, visionary experiment based on ideals that our broken system has forgotten, and this legislation offers a much needed course-correction that will allow this experiment to continue flourishing. We now look to the Senate to take up this historic bill to revitalize our democracy.”
